Shreyas Iyer, recently appointed captain of the Punjab Kings, has lauded head coach Ricky Ponting’s ability to instill confidence in players. Speaking to the media on Tuesday (March 18), Iyer credited Ponting with making him feel like a “great player.”
“He supports everyone,” Iyer stated. “When I worked with him previously at Delhi Capitals, he made me feel like I could easily excel in this format. The confidence he gives a player is truly exceptional.”
Iyer, who joined Punjab Kings alongside Ponting this year, emphasized the team’s ambition. “Our goal is to win the trophy. It’s a step-by-step process, not an overnight achievement. However, the way we’re practicing and building camaraderie is very promising.”
Ponting reciprocated the praise, describing Iyer as “a great human being and a leader.” “He’s an IPL-winning captain, and we couldn’t have asked for more,” Ponting said. “He’s only been with us for a few days, but he’s already starting to make his mark. His leadership will continue to evolve as we approach our first game. I’m extremely happy to have him.”
Ponting also highlighted the balanced composition of the Punjab Kings squad. “We have a really good mix of youth and experience, with high-quality Indian and overseas players,” he explained. “I’m delighted with how the squad has come together. Our first training session went very well, and the boys are training effectively.”
Punjab Kings are set to commence their IPL 2024 campaign on March 25 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They will then play their first two home games at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh, facing Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
