The much-anticipated first Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium was completely washed out on the opening day due to persistent rain. The match officials decided to call off play around 2:30 PM on Wednesday.
Despite the Sub-Air system’s efforts to drain the field at a rate of 10,000 liters per minute, the constant drizzle throughout the day made it ineffective. The toss for the match has been rescheduled for 8:45 AM on Thursday, with play expected to begin at 9:15 AM if the weather cooperates.
When the rain briefly subsided after stumps, the pitch covers were removed for the first time. The ground staff quickly undertook necessary technical work to prepare the pitch for the next day. India captain Rohit Sharma also inspected the playing surface, which was still damp in some areas.
With more rain forecast for the rest of the day, the city remains under an Orange Alert. Schools have been closed, and office-goers have been advised to work from home.
