Temba Bavuma test

A fiery start from Sri Lanka’s pace attack threatened to derail South Africa’s innings on Day 1 of the first Test at St George’s Park. However, a steady partnership between Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton helped the hosts recover to reach 82/3 at Lunch.

The day began with a shock for South Africa as opener Toni de Zorzi was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings. A low, incoming delivery from Asitha Fernando trapped de Zorzi LBW, despite a hopeful review.

Aiden Markram provided a brief counter-attack, striking a couple of boundaries before falling victim to a sharp in-swinger from Lahiru Kumara. Kumara, celebrating his 100th Test wicket, soon removed Tristan Stubbs as well, leaving South Africa reeling at 44/3.

However, Bavuma and Rickelton steadied the ship with a composed partnership. Bavuma, in particular, looked in fine form, punishing loose deliveries and even clearing the boundary rope. The duo’s unbeaten stand of 38 runs ensured that South Africa ended the session on a positive note.

Brief Scores: South Africa 82/3 (Ryan Rickleton 29*, Temba Bavuma 27*; Lahiru Kumara 2-17) vs Sri Lanka
