Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been officially eliminated from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoff race after their crucial encounter against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium ended in a no-result due to persistent heavy rain. The washout awarded both teams a single point each, a result that mathematically extinguished SRH’s chances of securing a top-four finish.
The Hyderabad franchise came into the match with a glimmer of hope, needing a victory to keep their slender playoff aspirations alive. Their bowlers had put up a commendable performance in the first innings, restricting Delhi Capitals to a modest total of 133/7 in their 20 overs. SRH captain Pat Cummins led from the front, delivering a sensational opening spell that saw him become the first IPL captain to take three wickets in the powerplay. His victims included Karun Nair, Faf du Plessis, and Abishek Porel, each dismissed on the first ball of their respective overs. Jaydev Unadkat also chipped in with a crucial wicket, removing KL Rahul.
Despite the early breakthroughs by SRH’s pace attack, DC managed to recover কিছুটা thanks to a resilient 66-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Tristan Stubbs (41 not out) and Ashutosh Sharma (41). Their efforts helped DC reach a fighting total, giving their bowlers something to defend.
However, as the innings break commenced, the heavens opened up in Hyderabad. The downpour intensified, leading to a significant delay. Despite the best efforts of the ground staff, the outfield became too wet for play to resume, forcing the umpires to call off the match at 11:10 PM local time.
The no-result was a bitter pill to swallow for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Having restricted the opposition to a chaseable score, they were denied the opportunity to secure the much-needed two points that could have kept them in the playoff hunt. With only three wins in their eleven matches, SRH now sit at the eighth position in the points table with seven points. Even if they were to win their remaining three matches, their maximum possible points tally of 13 would not be enough, as several other teams have already surpassed or are on the verge of surpassing this mark.
This premature exit marks a disappointing end to SRH’s IPL 2025 campaign, especially considering they were the runners-up in the previous season. While they started this season with a record-breaking 286 runs in their opening match against Rajasthan Royals, their performance dipped significantly as the tournament progressed. Consistency eluded them, and key players could not replicate their previous heroics.
For Delhi Capitals, the single point gained from the washout keeps their playoff hopes mathematically alive, albeit making their path tougher. They now have 13 points from 11 matches and are in fifth place. To secure a playoff berth, they will likely need to win at least two of their remaining three matches.
The washout in Hyderabad has further intensified the race for the IPL 2025 playoffs. With several teams vying for the remaining spots, every match in the final leg of the league stage will be crucial. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Titans currently occupy the top four positions, but the battle for qualification is far from over.
Sunrisers Hyderabad will now play their remaining matches for pride, starting with a home game against Kolkata Knight Riders. While their playoff dream has ended, they will aim to finish the season on a positive note and build for the next edition of the IPL. The rain in Hyderabad has not only washed out a game but also the playoff hopes of the Orange Army, leaving their fans with a sense of what could have been.
