Joe Root

England’s dominance over Sri Lanka continued on the opening day of the second Test, as Joe Root and Gus Atkinson put on a masterclass to give the hosts a commanding lead.

The day began with Sri Lanka looking to build on their first Test win, but England’s batting prowess proved too much. Root, in particular, was in sublime form, notching his 33rd Test century, equaling the record held by Sir Alastair Cook. His innings was a mixture of elegance and aggression, as he effortlessly navigated the slow-paced pitch.

Despite Sri Lanka’s early breakthrough of Chris Woakes, Root and Atkinson formed a formidable partnership. Atkinson, in particular, impressed with his aggressive batting, counteracting Sri Lanka’s bowling tactics with powerful drives and lofted shots.

England’s lower order also contributed significantly, with Matthew Potts providing valuable support to Atkinson. The bowling attack, led by the impressive Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando, struggled to maintain their early momentum, allowing England to take control of the day’s proceedings.

With Root and Atkinson still at the crease, England will be looking to build on their strong position and secure a significant first-innings lead. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will need to regroup and find a way to limit England’s scoring in the remaining overs.
