A whirlwind of wickets and a see-saw battle characterized the opening day of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa. Despite Taijul Islam’s five-wicket haul, the hosts found themselves trailing by 34 runs at stumps, with South Africa holding a 140-6 lead.
Bangladesh’s innings collapsed early, with Wiaan Mulder’s incisive swing bowling proving too much for the top order. Despite a brief resistance from Mahmudul Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, the Proteas’ pace attack, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada, tore through the batting lineup. Rabada, celebrating his 300th Test wicket, finished with figures of 3-26.
The hosts managed to reach a total of 102, with Mahmudul Hasan top-scoring with 30. In reply, South Africa’s innings also faced early setbacks, with Mahmudul removing Aiden Markram in the first over. However, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi counterattacked, punishing the bowlers for any errors.
Taijul Islam, who had earlier taken a five-wicket haul, returned to claim the wickets of Stubbs, David Bedingham, and de Zorzi. Matthew Breetzke and Ryan Rickelton also fell cheaply, leaving South Africa reeling at 108-6.
Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder steadied the ship towards the end of the day, helping South Africa extend their lead. The Proteas will look to build on their advantage on the second day.
