Washington Sundar’s dream Test comeback in Pune was nothing short of magical. Returning to the Indian Test team after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, the offspinner claimed a career-best 7 for 59 on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand.
Sundar, who was a late addition to the squad, had been working closely with fellow offspinner R Ashwin in the nets. Ashwin’s guidance on bowling conditions and pace proved invaluable.
The young spinner showcased a variety of deliveries, including slower balls and cutters, to trouble the New Zealand batsmen. His seven-wicket haul, split between the first and second sessions, included five dismissals via caught behind or bowled.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir had praised Sundar’s control and accuracy, which were crucial on a pitch offering assistance to spinners. Luke Ronchi, New Zealand’s batting coach, acknowledged Sundar’s ability to create different angles and consistently hit a good area.
The match-winning performance marked a significant milestone in Sundar’s career. His coach, Senthilnathan, noted that the spinner had been working on his variations and mindset for red-ball cricket. While Sundar’s T20 experience has helped him develop subtle variations, the focus for Test cricket is on patience and control.
With this exceptional performance, Washington Sundar has cemented his place in the Indian Test team and looks set to make a lasting impact.
