Eliminated Teams:

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
  • Rajasthan Royals (RR)
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

The Magic Number and Beyond

Historically, 18 points has been considered a safe threshold for playoff qualification in a 10-team IPL season. However, with the competition being so tight this year, even 16 or 17 points might be enough for some teams, depending on the net run rate (NRR) scenarios.

Qualification Scenarios for the Top Contenders:

  • Gujarat Titans (16 points): Just one more win from their remaining three matches will secure their playoff spot. They are also in a strong position to finish in the top two.
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru (16 points): Similar to GT, one more victory in their remaining three games should be enough for RCB to qualify. They also have a good chance of a top-two finish.
  • Punjab Kings (15 points): With three matches still to play, two wins will guarantee a playoff berth for PBKS and significantly boost their chances of a top-two finish. Their upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals is crucial.
  • Mumbai Indians (14 points): Having played one more game than most of their rivals, MI need to win at least one of their remaining two matches to feel relatively safe. Winning both would put them in a very strong position for a top-two spot due to their superior NRR.

The Chasing Pack:

  • Delhi Capitals (13 points): DC face a challenging run-in with matches against PBKS, GT, and MI. They likely need to win at least two, if not all three, to have a realistic chance of qualifying. Their NRR is decent, which could be a factor if they end up tied on points.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders (11 points): KKR’s recent loss against CSK has severely dented their playoff hopes. With only two away games remaining, they need to win both and hope for favourable results from other matches, particularly for MI, DC, and LSG to drop points. Their current NRR is the lowest among the top six teams, making it an uphill battle even if they reach 15 points.
  • Lucknow Super Giants (10 points): LSG have the toughest task among the contenders. They need to win all three of their remaining matches and hope that other teams above them falter. Their negative NRR means they will likely need more than 16 points to qualify.

Key Factors to Watch:

  • Net Run Rate (NRR): If multiple teams finish with the same number of points, the team with the higher NRR will be ranked higher. This makes the margin of victory and defeat in the remaining matches crucial.
  • Head-to-Head Records: If teams are tied on points, the results of their head-to-head encounters during the league stage will be considered.
  • Remaining Fixtures: The difficulty of the remaining matches for each team will play a significant role in how the qualification scenarios unfold. Direct clashes between teams vying for playoff spots (like PBKS vs DC) will be particularly important.

Possible Scenarios:

  • Dominant Top Four: If GT, RCB, and PBKS win most of their remaining games, they could secure the top three spots, leaving MI, DC, and KKR to battle for the final playoff berth based on their performances and NRR.
  • Close Finish: It’s highly likely that the final playoff spots will be decided in the last few league matches, with several teams potentially finishing on the same number of points, bringing NRR into sharp focus.
  • Spoilers: With RR, SRH, and CSK already out of contention, they could still play a crucial role by causing upsets against teams aiming for a playoff spot.

The IPL 2025 playoff race promises an exciting conclusion to the league stage. Fans will be eagerly following each match as the qualification puzzle gets closer to being solved. The next few days will be filled with permutations and combinations as the teams fight for a place in the knockout stages.
