Jon Lewis has stepped down from his position as head coach of the England Women’s cricket team, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Friday (March 21). The ECB stated they will provide updates on the search for a new head coach in due course.
Lewis, who assumed the role in November 2022, led England to 52 wins out of 73 matches. Under his leadership, England achieved second place in both T20I and ODI ICC rankings, trailing only Australia. However, his tenure was marked by significant challenges: England drew the 2023 home Ashes series 8-8, suffered a 16-0 defeat in Australia earlier this year, and failed to reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
In his departure statement, Lewis expressed gratitude for his time with the team and a commitment to continue supporting women’s cricket. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women’s Head Coach,” he said. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country.”
He highlighted the team’s progress, noting an 83% win rate in 2024, and affirmed his dedication to advancing women’s cricket in future endeavors. “I have worked tirelessly with this group of young players to develop their skills and understanding of modern-day white ball cricket…and I am determined to continue to help drive women’s cricket forward in whatever comes next for me,” Lewis concluded.
