Dutch cricket has seen the retirement of middle-order batsman Sybrand Engelbrecht, following the Netherlands’ exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup. The 35-year-old announced his decision after the team’s final group stage match against Sri Lanka.
Engelbrecht’s international career, though brief, was marked by determination and a touch of the unexpected. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he represented his home nation at the 2008 U19 World Cup, famously taking a spectacular catch to dismiss a young Virat Kohli. Despite his early promise, he couldn’t break into the Proteas setup and opted to pursue a career in project management in 2016.
Following a work relocation to the Netherlands in 2021, Engelbrecht reignited his cricketing passion playing club cricket. His impressive form there led to a remarkable international debut for the Netherlands at the 2023 ODI World Cup. He continued his impressive run into the 2024 T20 World Cup, emerging as the Netherlands’ highest run-scorer in the tournament with 98 runs.
Engelbrecht’s international career, though short-lived, was a testament to his dedication and adaptability. He leaves the sport with a reputation as a dependable batsman and a fielder with a knack for the spectacular. The Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) acknowledged his contribution, highlighting his positive influence on the team.
